History

BERKELEY COUNTY

Second oldest county in West Virginia. Created in 1771 from the northern third of Frederick County (Virginia), and named for Norbourne Berkeley (Baron de Botetourt), Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770.

At Bunker Hill, in this county, in 1726, Morgan Morgan founded the first permanent settlement of record in Western Virginia. In commemoration of this event, the State of West Virginia has erected a monument in the Bunker Hill roadside park and has placed a marker at the grave of Morgan Morgan, which is in a cemetery near the park.

The first Episcopal Church (Christ Church) in what is now West Virginia was erected at Bunker Hill by Morgan Morgan in 1740. Three years later (about 1743), the first Baptist Church (Mill Creek Church) was organized at Gerrardstown.

Martinsburg

"Northern Gateway of the Shenandoah Valley and the Heart of the Eastern Panhandle." Our community, originally "Martin's Town", began in the 1750's as a few houses near what is now the intersection of Stephen and Water Streets. It was named after Col. Thomas Bryan Martin, nephew of Thomas Lord Fairfax, who held the grant of land embracing the entire area. Martinsburg was officially chartered by the General Assembly of Virginia in October, 1778, after being made the county seat of the newly formed Berkeley County in 1772.

Originally a busy mill town, Martinsburg also housed an armory owned by General Adam Stephen which produced guns for the American Revolution. Our National Guard unit dates back to 1735, when it was formed by Morgan Morgan. The men of this unit were among George Washington's troops near Boston at the very beginning of the War of Independence.

The arrival of the B&O Railroad in 1842 gave the town a major economic boost which set off a spree of building that lasted to the Civil War. Many downtown buildings reflect that era of architecture. Also, left to us from the high days of the railroad is the fascinating Roundhouse.

After the Civil War, Martinsburg underwent its greatest change as America's industrial age began. Although the region has not been without its growing pains, it has prospered and continues to be a progressive and growing community.

Driver's License

Mountainheart Child Care Services - is a child care resource and referral service. They provide subsidized child care to those parents who qualify, based on income guidelines or for those parents in school or the West Virginia Works Program.
