Community Event – 10th Annual Identity Crisis Fundraiser
August 10 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
“The 10th Annual Identity Crisis Fundraiser: A Decade of Inspiration! Come as you are NOT!”
Each August, Shepherdstown, WV is transformed for the evening by a fundraiser called “Identity Crisis”. Red carpet and pink up-lighting all in the name of raising awareness and funds for an amazing organization called BCA-CV (Breast Cancer Awareness of Cumberland Valley).
The Identity Crisis Fundraiser will be back for its 10th year this summer on Saturday, August 10th, 2019, to reclaim the historic streets and restaurants of this busy little university town.
The theme for the 10th Anniversary of the Identity Crisis is “Come as You Are NOT!”,
encompassing all past themes to make this year’s event truly an evening to remember. Take us back to our early days, wear black and red (2010), or “wig out” like the 2011 “Wig Party”.
Travel through time to 2014’s “Music-A Trip in Time” or look to the future and beyond
celebrating 2015’s “Sci-Fi” theme, or any time from the past—or future—250 years (2012).
Other themes include “Red Carpet”, “Masquerade”, “Head Games” and “Escape to the Islands”
… your imagination is your only limitation.
Celebrating a decade of inspiration, the costume choices are endless. “This is the part of the event that I like the best,” says Tara Sanders Lowe, “The participants are so creative, and you can never guess “who” will show up. Beethoven can be dancing with a movie star, or someone in Steam Punk attire can be laughing along with a Hawaiian beauty. From gorgeous masks to gravity-defying head gear to fairy wings to tuxedos. So the possibilities and diversity are limitless. It is all about being creative, having fun and raising money and awareness for cancer.”
“A recurring issue is folks expressing that they aren’t sure if they will be the only ones dressed up or the opposite, that they aren’t comfortable with dressing up. There are many ways to support the event and the organization and you don’t have to dress up, but most people do. The crazier the costuming, the better the photographs and more interest we create! We have about a dozen or so paparazzi throughout the town that are part of the production and also step and repeats, a photo booth and more. Part of the fun is capturing the amazing energy and “Identities” of the night”, says Lowe.
The board members of the Victory Project continue to be amazed and enthusiastically thankful for all of the participants, volunteers and in-kind/financial sponsors. The encouragement and involvement from the community and businesses in the area is truly awesome!
The main portion of the event is held in downtown Shepherdstown and many of the restaurants, pubs and town establishments will welcome you and your new Identity to eat, drink, shop and dance the night away! Our headline event will be the DJ Dance Party at Town Run Brewery starting at 9:30 pm. For those who wish to have a more immersed experience, they can sign up for a VIP ticket, which affords entrance into a VIP pre-party, including a Motorcade ride into town with a red-carpet arrival, paparazzi and more!
This will be the seventh year that we have used proceeds from the event to support Breast Cancer Awareness – Cumberland Valley (BCA–CV). “BCA–CV strives through community
involvement to make understood the impact of breast cancer and ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone”. The BCA–CV is located in Hagerstown, MD, and serves the 4-state area with much needed support and services, all of which are FREE. This amazing organization made a bold and conscious move to disengage their association with the nationally sponsored organization so that they could guarantee all contributions and subsequent distributions went to the local community. Currently, they offer education, support groups for both survivors and families, a toll free HOPELINE, mammograms, wigs/hats/turbans, dinners, house cleaning, aftersurgery care packages, prosthesis, bras and a Special Needs Assistance Program.
