If you could build the perfect mattress and bedding store, what would it look like?
Starting with the perfect retail store, our team spent weeks brainstorming how to re-invent the mattress and bedding store experience. What should we do differently than the other guys? What should our store look like? Should anything stay the same about the experience?
To start with, we removed the commissioned salesperson from the sales floor. In almost all mattress store chains, the salesperson is paid on which mattress they convince you to buy. With that being said, our competition is almost always trying to upsell a customer to a more expensive mattress or a brand that pays them a higher commission. Rather than using the same pay model as everyone else in the industry, we decided to pay our employees a base salary plus a commission based on the number of sales that they make. By handling pay this way, we feel our method of employee payment is the most fair system in the industry. In our eyes, by removing the incentive to sell a specific brand or bed, we are aligning the customer’s goal of finding the best mattress for their budget with our salesperson’s desire to make a sale.
After addressing employee pay, we looked at the selection of bedding. We wanted our customers to have all the biggest and best brands available to them, but we didn’t want our customers to be overwhelmed by the number of mattresses in the store. We stripped our sales floor down to the latest and greatest in bedding, and left room for nothing else. We only show and stock 30 mattresses at our location.
Next, we considered all the things that make a store fun to shop. We looked at things such as lighting and music, and we also considered the amount of time that the average consumer spends in a mattress store.
In other words, we have tried to think about everything that makes buying a mattress such a pain in the…back.
